rugged country - всю голову сломала. Единственное, что смогла изобрести: "непроходимая страна": tara- (go athwart) -> tárima (проходимая) -> altárima (непроходимая).

at unawares... he came suddenly - marta *son (безличное: случилось ему)... tula (прийти).
cliff-tops - ollingar по аналогии с orontinga, aldinga (mountain-top, tree-top)

dren- is almost certainly an evolved form from TER-, TERES- pierce; the last element likely derives from KIRIS- cut.
